Who Are We and Where Are We Based?

Our offices are based in Warrington, Cheshire, where our items are shipped from. Each product is handcrafted in Damietta, Egypt.

The ancient Egyptians formed the first of the great classical civilizations. While most of Europe was still in the Stone Age, the Egyptians were building palaces, studying mathematics and writing on papyrus. They were great builders and great artists, drawing inspiration for their art from nature. A complex social and religious structure was in place whilst this was happening. The Egyptians kept books of accounts and recorded history; their children played with carved wooden toys with moving parts; that’s why our furniture embraces the traditional culture.

Damietta is the capital of Damietta Governorate, a port city located 8 miles (13km) from the Mediterranean on the right bank of the Dameitta branch of the Nile and 120 miles (200km) north of Cairo. The name is a corruption of the ancient Coptic Tamiati. Egypt was eventually conquered by Alexander the Great, and later by the Romans. Both the Greek and Roman conquerors were significantly influenced by Egyptian culture, art and philosophy, so that to some extent it was a case of the conquerors being civilized by the conquered.

The Abbasids used Damietta as entry ports to India and the Tang Empire of China. Damietta was an important naval base during the Abbasid, Tulunid and Fatimid periods. This led to several attacks by the Byzantine Empire, most notably the sack and destruction of the city in May 853BC.

Ancient Egyptian's furniture was originally made of many different materials, including reeds, wood, stone, metals, straws, and ivory. Some civilizations used inlay or they carved images of mythological creatures and constellations into their furniture. Occasionally furniture would be inlaid into a certain shape.

The type and size of the furniture depended on the wealth of the owner. Rich Mesopotamians decorated tables with metals; they also had padded chairs with felt, rushes, and upholstery. More expensive chairs used metal inlays; Wooden frames and mattresses in beds were only accessible to rich citizens and in Egypt thrones were only used by the rich.
